Mr Bagel Cafe, located at 1423 E.14th St. is a cute place, with about 20 seats that served delicious homemade bagels with just about anything on them, as well as dozens of specialty bagel sandwiches. The also serve several different types of Vietnamese Bánh mì sandwiches.
In the mood for a breakfasty sandwich before our hike, I asked for their recommendation, and was told the California sandwich was the most popular, so I had to go off their recommendation. This sandwich comes with cucumber, tomato, avocado, lettuce, and roasted turkey. There was also something listed as ‘buttermilk’ on the ingredients, but never found out what that was…maybe the sauce accompanying it. You can of course choose what type of bagel it come on, and I can almost never turn down an asiago cheese bagel.
In hindsight after looking over the menu, I noticed that this happened to be the most expensive thing on their menu ($6.75) but still worth it.
My better half asked for a Bánh mì without cilantro (I know she’s a freak, Vietnamese food without cilantro?) and having never had one myself, didn’t know that there were multiple kinds one could get, and so didn’t know what protein to get her. So I got what I would have wanted in a sandwich, roast beef. Turns out that pork is the more common ingredient to put inside a Bánh mì, but it can really be just about anything. It came with the usual fixings, pickled carrots and daikon, and a spicy sauce, and even though we’d asked for no cilantro, it still came with it. It was easy to pick off since it was in long stems, so no harm, no foul.
As others have mention on the internets, one of the pluses of this place is that the two behind the counter (presumably the owners) are friendly and efficient, and that it is quiet (probably something the owners wish they could change) because there were few people inside. However they looked optimistic about selling a ton of bagels as the counter display was full of tasty treats.
Give this place a shot! Better bagels than Zocalo, and just as good as Main Street Bagels on Macarthur Blvd.
